The House of Dior is one of the world's most prestigious couture houses. Founded in 1946 by Christian Dior, it revolutionized fashion by creating the New Look, a feminine, elegant silhouette that marked the 1950s. The exhibition "La Galerie Dior", in Paris, retraces the history of the house through a selection of dresses, drawings and jewelry. The tour is organized chronologically, allowing visitors to discover the different eras and styles of the house.
The story of Christian Dior
Born in Granville, Normandy, in 1905, Christian Dior began his career in fashion as assistant to couturier Robert Piguet. In 1946, he founded his own couture house, which enjoyed immediate success with the presentation of its first collection. The New Look, presented in 1947, is a real revolution, it is characterized by wide jupes, adjusted sizes and famous size of guêpe. After an era marked by the war, rationing and penuries, the New Look gives back to women the taste of glamour, luxury and femininity. The style was quickly adopted by stars and women the world over.
Dior saw jewellery as an essential part of his overall vision of fashion. He believed that jewellery could enhance and complete a woman's look, adding a touch of elegance. The intricate designs, craftsmanship and luxurious materials of the jewellery, such as diamonds, pearls and precious stones, are testament to Dior's attention to detail and his commitment to creating exquisite pieces that complemented his couture creations.
The exhibition
The 13 rooms are decorated to the finest detail, and are dotted with DIOR treasures. You can admire emblematic dresses such as the "Bar" dress, the "Corolle" dress and the "Dolce Vita" dress. Beautiful designs and jewellery are also on display.
Over the years, Dior's relationship with jewellery has continued to evolve. The house expanded into the world of high-end jewellery with the creation of Dior Joaillerie. Today, Dior Joaillerie offers a wide range of exquisite pieces, from engagement rings to necklaces, all inspired by the brand's rich heritage and distinctive aesthetic.
